Why warehouse scanners disconnect from Wi-Fi
When a scanner stops working, start by checking whether it lost Wi-Fi, failed to sign in or lost its app connection. Then record where and when it happened.
Start with one dropout
A scanner that “drops out” may lose Wi-Fi, fail to sign in, or stay connected while the app stops. Check which happened before changing access points or channels.
- Time, shift and exact aisle or work zone.
- Scanner model, device identifier and application in use.
- What the operator saw: Wi-Fi disconnected, sign-in failed, or the application stopped responding.
- Whether the same device fails in other areas, or several devices fail in the same area.
- Recent changes to racking, stock, device software, access points or network settings.
Send the time and device details to your IT team. Ask them to check wireless, sign-in and app logs for that period.
Check where and when it happens
These clues can narrow the investigation. They do not prove the cause.
One aisle or one side of a rack
Check coverage and access point placement. Has new stock or racking come between the scanner and the access point?
While moving between zones
Check roaming and sign-in logs at the time of the pause.
At shift change or peak activity
Check how many devices were active, wireless airtime and app load at the same time.
One model or one application
Try a different scanner in the same place. Compare its settings and app before changing the network.
What to ask the IT team to check
For the time of the fault, check connection and roaming events, sign-in failures, access point health and the wired network behind it. Compare a failing scanner with one that worked nearby. If Wi-Fi stayed connected, check the app and the systems it uses.
Cisco documents reasons a controller disconnects a client. Your system may use different terms, but its event time and reason can help IT find the fault.
When to book a site survey
If failures happen in the same area or along the same route, a survey can measure coverage, interference, roaming and capacity while the warehouse is working. Ask for a report that shows the faults found and the recommended fixes.
